Designing Around Your Floors – Dark Coloured Floors
Designing any room is an opportunity to express your creativity, personality, and style. Your flooring, no matter the material or colour, will bring its own decorative character to a room. It’s up to you to build upon that character.
First, think about what you want out of your room. Are you feeling a minimalist design, modern farmhouse, or rustic design? There are lots of design styles that work well with dark coloured floors. Perhaps a more traditional motif? By identifying the look you’re after you have a better idea of how to approach the design of your room.
Considering Colour
Next, consider some basic design principles like colour. You can match colours or you can contrast colours. Contrasting colours, like blue and orange, create a colour pop that stands out. That’s why, for the most part, contrasting colours are best used as accents.
A darker floor, like Fuzion Flooring’s Deco as an example, has deep dark brown tones that will inherently feel warm, traditional, and substantial in any room. Pull brightness into the room with lighter shades on your walls, cabinets, furniture, and rugs. Think whites, creams, tans, and medium greys to provide a rich contrast. These lighter tones will also help open up a smaller room, particularly when applied to the walls. Darker floors with brown undertones also do exceptionally well with furniture and accent pieces on the cooler side of the colour wheel. Light blues and greens, teals and warm whites will create a beautiful accent to dark floors.
Using Your Existing Furniture
It may not be feasible or desirable to swap out your existing furniture for lighter, airier colours. If you have darker-coloured furniture you’d like to continue enjoying, try using a light-coloured rug as a great way to create a visual break between your flooring and furniture. Rugs also help to define part of a space in a room, such as a seating area. Rugs with a softer texture will offer a nice variation against the rugged features of your hardwood floors.
Fortunately, dark hardwoods are extremely adaptable. You can easily incorporate traditional design notes, contemporary styles, the freedom of minimalism, modern farmhouse or even mid-century modern to your design.
Paying Attention to Texture and Variation
Woods with low variation and minimal grain tend to provide for a more elegant and pair well with traditional and classic designs as well as minimalist and mid-century modern trappings.
In contrast, many species have a great deal of variation. Hand scraped and wire brushed finishes, like Fuzion’s Patina Venice Engineered Hardwood will work well in bigger rooms where more open areas can be afforded exposing the character of the wood across the space. Country Chic, Seaside, and Modern Farmhouse designs will truly elevate rustic flooring choices.
With a little creativity and vision, you will be able to use dark coloured to express your style and individuality. Are you looking to work new flooring into your design? Check out our Look Book to help select the ideal flooring for your space.
